TEAM CANADIAN NORTH HITS $10,000 TARGET AT NATIONALS
Team Canadian North players had more than 10,000 reasons to cheer at the Canadian Squash Championships in Calgary on Saturday as the first-ever Squash Hunger campaign successfully reached its $10,000 fundraising goal, and one of the North’s top players battled for a national title.
Jessica Patterson, a 25-year-old Iqaluit-born player who picked up her first racquet in 2001, narrowly missed capturing her first national Women’s “A” title, losing 9-2, 9-7, 9-7 to Danielle Letourneau of Calgary in the final.
“I lost a tough match, but it was still a great way to finish the tournament,” says Patterson, who was a Team Canadian North co-captain and one of this year’s top fundraisers. “The entire team played hard and I was really proud of how we represented the North in Calgary.”
Following a month of fitness training and fundraising, Team Canadian North players combined to win 476 points at the Championships, more than enough to reach this year’s $10,000 fundraising target.
With every point won at the nationals, a donation is being made to Food First Foundation, the NWT and Nunavut arm of Breakfast for Learning, a national non-profit organization that raises funds to support healthy breakfast, lunch and snack programs in schools across Canada.
“We couldn’t ask for a better finish to this year’s campaign,” says team Co-Captain James Pugsley, who has spent the past two weeks in discussions with Squash Canada about the possibility of expanding the Squash Hunger effort in 2008.
“Squash Hunger got a lot of attention in Calgary, and with the help of Breakfast For Learning and Squash Canada, we have an opportunity to introduce a national campaign that can help kids across the country.”
Pugsley, who played three strong matches before being eliminated from the Men’s 30+ draw on Friday, has been invited to present a national Squash Hunger strategy at Squash Canada’s annual general meeting in Winnipeg this June.
Dana Britton, Coordinator of Food First Foundation NWT, says reaching the $10,000 mark was an outstanding achievement for this newly-formed team. “It takes a lot of time and effort to make an initiative like Squash Hunger come together,” says Britton. “This group of volunteers really did something special and they, along with everyone who made a donation, have made a big difference for a lot of kids in the North.”
Currently Food First Foundation Grants are helping fund 20 healthy breakfast, lunch or snack programs across the NWT, providing food for over 1,500 students on a daily basis. In Nunavut, Food First financially supports eight school programs daily providing healthy breakfasts for nearly 1,600 students.
Britton says it costs on average just $2 to feed a student a nutritious meal through a school program in the NWT, and just $3 in Nunavut.
Shahier Razik of Toronto won the tournament, defeating Matthew Giuffre of Edmonton 3-0 (11-7, 11-4, 11-7) to claim a second straight national title. On the women’s side, Alana Miller of Winnipeg defeated Runa Reta of Ottawa by a score of 3-0 (9-1, 9-0, 9-1) to win her first championship since 2004.
Allan Cook was the top male player on Team Canadian North, finishing 5th in the Men’s “A” Division after an impressive 5-1 record over four days.
Team Canadian North is proudly sponsored by Canadian North, Nunasi Corporation, Coast Plaza Hotel and Conference Centre in Calgary and the Black Knight Pub.

Since 1977, BBE has become a significant presence on the logistics scene, by connecting industry with the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. “We were pleased when BBE approached NorTerra to begin discussions about the sale of the company. They recognized that we had compatible business objectives, and given our history in the north, we are happy to be adding BBE to our portfolio,” explained NorTerra President, Carmen Loberg. “There’s potential here for us to build on the good work that has been done by BBE and to expand the company into other parts of Western Canada,” he said.

NORTERRA ACQUIRES NORTHERN INDUSTRIAL SALES TO BECOME LARGEST PROVIDER OF INDUSTRIAL SUPPLIES NORTH OF 60
Monday, April 2, 2007 - NorTerra Inc. has reached an agreement to acquire Independent Industrial Supply of north central British Columbia, Northern Industrial Sales of western British Columbia and the Northern Metalic Sales branches located in the Northwest Territories and the Yukon. Derek Wilson, former owner of Independent Industrial Supply becomes President of the merged companies that will continue to operate and be known as Northern Industrial Sales.
This merger and acquisition, sees the NorTerra Group of Companies diversifying into the industrial supply sector, a move that is entirely compatible with its business objectives. “Northern Industrial Sales is a great fit for us and we look forward to working with our new partners, customers and suppliers to ensure that we meet the emerging needs of the North,” explained NorTerra President, Carmen Loberg. “This acquisition represents positive news for our owners, the Inuvialuit Development Corporation (IDC) and the Nunasi Corporation (Nunasi), and in turn good news for the people of Canada’s Arctic,” he commented.
Northern Industrial Sales will have BC branches in: Prince George, Terrace, Chetwynd, Prince Rupert and Quesnel and Northern branches in: Whitehorse, Hay River, Yellowknife, Norman Wells, Inuvik, Watson Lake, and Dawson City. “This larger company will mean that our customers will see the advantages of volume purchasing, and other efficiencies of scale without losing the personal service and local insights that have made the companies successful to date. We remain committed to offering service that is professional, prompt, and infused with local knowledge. Understanding the needs of the North and the needs of our customer, suppliers and partners will be our way of remaining competitive and profitable,” explained Derek Wilson.
After decades of business success with Northern Metalic Sales in the Yukon and Northwest Territories, owner Don Cox agrees that understanding the unique needs of Northern industries, and the particular challenges of working in remote areas in a harsh climate will remain key to Northern Industrial Sales’ success going forward. “We kept our Northern values at the centre of our business decisions and work ethic. Selling to a Canadian organization that understands the needs of these communities was important to me. NorTerra was a great fit because of its track record and reputation in this part of the world. I wish the new entity every success,” commented Cox.

LOGO
AND THEME ANNOUNCED FOR 2008 AWG GAMES!
For Immediate Release - February 26, 2006
(Yellowknife, NT) Announcing the theme for the 2008
Arctic Winter Games on Saturday, and unveiling their
new logo, the 2008 Arctic Winter Games Host Society created
a big buzz of excitement at Centre Square Mall!
Lead by a piper from the NWT Pipe Band, and flanked
by two RCMP in Red Serge, a delegation of 50 Host Society
volunteers in bright red jackets marched through the
mall, to a podium and stage, decorated with balloons
and banners showcasing the new 2008 theme and logo.
“The theme chose for 2008 and released to the
public today is Northern Stars – Inspired by
Dreams,” said Cathie Bolstad, President of
the 2008 Host Society to about 200 people gathered around
to get in on the excitement.
She noted that the theme recognizes that the Arctic
Winter Games began as a dream, inspired by dedication
and hard work of athletes from remote communities as
they worked to place themselves among the stars.
“The Arctic Winter Games have provided a strong
competitive training ground for northern stars who have
gone on to pursue and achieve their dreams – in
sport – and in life,” she said.
She also noted that the games give every northern athlete,
coach, parent and volunteer around the circumpolar world
today a chance to realize a dream – whether it
is coming from a small community to see and experience
a larger centre or to make new friends, or to become
a star – taking home a bronze, silver or gold ulu
to celebrate success.
Mayor Van Tighem was there to join the
celebration and noted that everyone in the city should
become involved. “ Our
city has changed so much since 1970 when the games were
first held here,” he said. “Hosting the 2008
Arctic Winter Games presents us with an incredible opportunity
to showcase our community and this will be the biggest
and the best homecoming celebration ever!”
The Host Society estimates it will cost $4.5 million
to host the 2000 participants in the games. Close to
$3 million dollars will be fundraised over the next two
years. The Nunasi Corporation was announced as the first
major sponsor on Saturday. The Nunasi Corporation is
contributing the building space and operations expenses
to house the Host Society Office until June 2008. The
value of their contribution amounts to $200,000.00 of
goods and services in-kind.
The 2008 Arctic Winter Games will be held March 9 – 15
th in Yellowknife.
