Olayuk Akesuk

Olayuk has been involved in politics since the creation of the territory in 1999 and has always worked hard to help Inuit in the Qikiqtani region maximize opportunities for advancement. He was the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the electoral district of South Baffin from 1999 to 2008. During his tenure as MLA, he also served as Minister for Mines, Environment, and Economic Development and Transportation.
Olayuk has served three terms with the Qikiqtani Inuit Association, two as Community Director for Cape Dorset, one as Vice-President and has recently been elected as QIA President. During this time, he assisted with the Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement (IIBA) for the Mary River mine, and he also co-chaired the IIBA committee from 2013-2016.
Throughout his life Akesuk has been passionate about hunting and providing country food for his family; a passion that speaks to his deep commitment to traditional Inuit culture and values.
Olayuk Akesuk was born and raised in Cape Dorset but now resides in Iqaluit with his wife.
